Executive Summary

The algae cell wall, composed of polysaccharides and glycoproteins, defends it against its environment. Microalgae also exhibit anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antibacterial, and antiviral effects. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that consuming algae protects people and animals from age-dependent diseases such as cardiac hypertension or hyperlipidemia. Marine forms of algae, commonly referred to as seaweeds, have been used as food and medicine for many centuries.
